Harbor UCLA Medical Center
Harbor UCLA Medical Center
Torrance, California
On January 13th, 2003, Dr. Stanley Klein of Torrance, California, renewed my life. Thank you Dr. Klein!

For the three weeks subsequent to January 13th, I was a patient at the Harbor UCLA Medical Center's Intensive Care Unit. My deepest appreciation to the ICU staff for the care they provided me.

Thank you to those unknown persons who donated the units of blood which I received.

Support Services for the Deaf (SSD)
In 2001 I founded Support Services for the Deaf (SSD). Today SSD is California's only Regional Center vendor which is owned, managed and staffed by the deaf, serving the deaf community. I continue to assist SSD as their advocate and consultant.

Kwan Family Website

November 19, 1998
Since its inception, the Internet was viewed by the information technology community as an enormously useful technical tool. By the mid-1990's it became obvious to many in the information technology community that the Internet would have profound implications for society at large. In 1998, years before there was a Facebook, or MySpace, or blogs, or podcasts, I established about a half-dozen social networking websites.

With Mother Teresa
Calcutta, India
July 23, 1995
Calcutta in July defies my writing ability. How does one describe the heat? Oppressive? Stifling? Overpowering? Or the population density? Or the poverty? Or the filth? That humans can live, and love, and laugh, in the face of such adversity is a testimony to the human spirit. Should we be encouraged that such a place could give spiritual birth to a Mother Teresa? Or should we be disheartened that an army of Mother Teresas has failed to materialize?

The trip from New Delhi was arduous; cancelled flights and travel delays brought us in to Calcutta late Saturday night. I was already exhausted from the workshop we wrapped up on Friday. I was not looking forward to teaching another workshop on Monday morning.

A Computer Simulation of Lip-Reading
March 1978
This study was my doctoral dissertation at the University of Santo Tomas. I combined elements of Shannon's Information Theory and Thom's Catastrophe Theory to construct a mathematical model of the lip-reading process. I then performed a number of lip-reading simulations to investigate lip-reading strategies. Results show how levels of syntactic information and semantic information affect perception. These results suggest strategies for utilizing lip-reading effectively in an educational setting. These results also imply the importance of supplementing lip-reading with additional information sources including sign language.

Suppressed Sidebands Frequency Modulation
Suppressed Sidebands Frequency Modulation (SSFM) by Means of Combined Amplitude and Frequency Modulation
ISBN B0007EGU4Y
January 1, 1966
From 1963 to 1967 I was a student at Florida State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Science (with honors) and a Master of Science degree in Mathematics.

This report was my senior thesis at Florida State University's School of Engineering Science. The study investigated what I thought was an interesting phenomenon: that frequency modulation sidebands could be suppressed if the associated carrier was amplitude modulated in certain ways. To my knowledge this phenomenon has never found a practical application.

Thomas Jefferson
The "Patron Saint" of Deism
It would be inaccurate to describe myself as a "practicing Deist" since we Deists don't "practice" anything. Neither do we evangelize, proselytize, dispatch missionaries to convert people to our beliefs or wage holy wars! We take pride in noting that many of history's greatest minds have called themselves Deists. A number of the United States' Founding Fathers were Deists; Thomas Jefferson is our "patron saint." Wikipedia is a good starting point to learn more about Deism.
